Cristian Chivu had to leave Inter captain Lautaro Martinez on the bench tonight.

Indeed, after injuring his back against Juventus, El Toro skipped yesterday’s training session.

Furthermore, he was still feeling the pain going into the game at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Therefore, Chivu had to choose between Francesco Pio Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny.

Although the latter took the Argentine’s plate against Juventus, the 44-year-old coach opted for the former.

As a result, Esposito joined forces with Marcus Thuram in attack.

It was the French superstar who stole the show in Amsterdam, netting a brace to inspire Inter to a much-needed win.

However, Esposito left a good impression on his Champions League debut.

Esposito was competing in Serie B only last season.

Therefore, performing on the continent’s grandest stage represents a giant leap in his career and a testament to his rapid growth.

“I’ve fulfilled a dream,” Esposito admitted after the game. “I really felt it when we were standing in the center and the Champions League anthem started playing.

“And I remembered when I used to listen to it with my family.

“It was definitely a great match, helped by a fantastic team that always gives you the right ball.

“For a striker, that makes things easier. I’m happy with my performance.”

Then, he delivered his verdict on a memorable start to the 2025/26 season.

“In these ten days, I’ve made all my debuts – Serie A, national team, and Champions League,” the young star said.

“We’ve broken the ice and started off on the right foot, now we have to keep going this way.”
