Ajax and Tottenham share a compact but vivid European history, and Spurs hold the edge in their head-to-head.
According to AjaxDaily, the clubs have met competitively four times across two ties, producing moments that endure for both sets of supporters.
In September 1981, FA Cup holders Tottenham visited Amsterdam in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Mark Falco scored twice and Ricky Villa added another as Spurs won the first leg.
Back at White Hart Lane, Spurs won 3-0 through Galvin, Falco and Ossie Ardiles to advance 6-1 on aggregate. At the time of writing, it is Ajax’s only away defeat in London. Tottenham later reached the semi-finals, losing narrowly to Barcelona.
The sides crossed paths again in the 2018-19 Champions League. Erik Ten Hag’s Ajax had eliminated holders Real Madrid and Italian champions Juventus to reach a first semi-final since 1996-97. Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs were debutants at this stage, and Ajax won the first leg 1-0 at Spurs’ new stadium.
Harry Kane was injured for the return. In Amsterdam, Matthijs de Ligt headed in inside five minutes and Hakim Ziyech struck before half-time, leaving Spurs needing three without reply. Lucas Moura scored twice in quick succession, then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time to send Tottenham through on away goals. It was the first time a team had overturned a two-goal deficit to win a Champions League semi-final second leg. Spurs lost the final 2-0 to Liverpool.
