England striker Alessia Russo has praised Lionesses teammate Lucy Bronze after it was revealed the defender played Euro 2025 with a broken leg.
The Lionesses roared home to victory in the Women’s Euro 2025 final, defeating Spain on penalties as Sarina Wiegman’s side brought football home once again.
Alessia Russo was vital to the triumph, scoring England’s equaliser to keep their hopes alive in the second half of regular time.
Another Lioness that was key to the comeback was defender Bronze, who revealed after the game that she had played the entire tournament with a fractured tibia.
“She’s a bit super human to be honest,” Russo said. “She is one of a kind, I actually don’t know anyone like her.
“She is a trailblazer and she’s one person in this team that inspires a lot of players and a lot of the future generation. She definetely inspires me.”
The historic victory in Switzerland makes the Lionesses the first English team to win a major tournament on foreign soil. Not only this, but it is the first time an English team have won back-to-back European Championships.
“It feels a bit mad,” Russo said. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. The emotions of a game, of a final, the highs and lows that you experience throughout the game and the resilience you have to come back and win on penalties.
“I don’t think it’s sunk in yet but it’s just incredible and we will celebrate as a team tonight. To be European champions once and then to do it back-to-back is just crazy.”
The Lionesses didn’t do it the easy way, having trailed by a goal or more in all three of their knockout fixtures this tournament.
“We just wanted to keep you lot entertained,” Russo said. “That’s tournament football, you have to win in so many different ways and we have done that.
“Whether it be 90 minutes, extra time, penalties, we’ve got the belief that we can go all the way and we’ve got the belief that we’ve got the players to do that. It was incredible, but hopefully people enjoyed it.”
