Álex Baena struck Spain’s winner as Yeremy Pino suffered injury at World Cup 2026. Villarreal have no current players in the squad after Luis de la Fuente omitted Alberto Moleiro.

Spain still feature four former Villarreal players, Borja Iglesias, Rodrigo Hernández, Álex Baena and Yeremy Pino. Iglesias has yet to play, while captain Rodri only sat out the final three minutes against Cape Verde.

With Lamine Yamal fit again, both have competed for the left flank, yet the Atlético de Madrid player started the last two, leaving Pino as an impact option.

Against Uruguay, Baena decided a drab contest late in the first half, helped by an error from Fernando Muslera, and was named player of the match. It was his first World Cup goal, in his second outing.

"I wanted to dedicate the goal to María, it was her birthday today and from above she helped that ball go in," Baena said. He told Dazn. María Caamaño would have turned 14 on Friday 26 June.

Pino replaced Baena in the 65th minute, then suffered a heavy fall that left him in clear pain in his left shoulder. With all changes used he returned, clearly restricted. De la Fuente said he had done something heroic and that it could be a clavicle injury, with tests tomorrow, adding it is likely the clavicle is broken.
