Álex Grimaldo has reached full agreement on personal terms with Atlético Madrid, taking a significant step towards a potential move.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spain international has approved Atlético’s project, with only an agreement between Atlético and Bayer Leverkusen still to be settled.

The Spanish club are in direct talks with the German side, seeking a final deal to secure the left-back’s return to La Liga. The operation is not closed, but the outlook is considered very positive by those involved.

Grimaldo’s preference could be decisive, with Atlético’s sporting plan appealing to him and speeding up the decision-making. He has also been linked with Barcelona, Juventus and Milan.

The former Benfica defender played in Lisbon from 2016 to 2023 before joining Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer, where he has been a standout since. Another ex Benfica mainstay, goalkeeper Jan Oblak, has become a leading figure at Atlético.
