Alex McCarthy explains Leicester choice after turning down Chelsea | OneFootball

According to Sainstmarching.com, Alex McCarthy had an offer from Chelsea after leaving Southampton, but chose a free-transfer move to League One Leicester City. The one-time England international, 36, is seeking regular football.

McCarthy was attracted by the chance to work again with Russell Martin and by Leicester’s stature, calling the switch the right challenge after time on the bench.

Although he only featured 14 times under Martin, he played 90 times for Ralph Hasenhuttl while at Southampton. Their brief spell together proved memorable.

Three of those 14 outings came in the 2023/24 Championship play-offs when he replaced first-choice goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. He kept two clean sheets as Southampton secured promotion, a run that underlined his readiness for a fresh start.

McCarthy has 152 Premier League appearances and last played in League One in 2010 with Brentford. The move is aimed at reigniting a career that had stalled as a reserve at St Mary’s, and he wants to embrace a demanding stage at a club with strong history.
