Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to be sidelined for six to eight weeks (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
Alexander-Arnold was forced off the pitch in the fifth minute of Madrid’s Champions League opener against Olympique Marseille.
Medical tests revealed that he has suffered a muscle injury in the hamstring of his left leg, according to an official statement from the club’s medical team.
The defender is now expected to return in November. He will miss Madrid’s upcoming Champions League fixture against former club Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold’s injury is a further blow for Alonso, who also has to deal with Dani Carvajal’s suspension.
Carvajal received a straight red card during the same game, potentially ruling him out for three Champions League matches.
With both first-choice right-backs unavailable, Madrid will have to find alternatives in a crucial period of the season.
The manager may turn to Federico Valverde, who previously featured in that position under former manager Carlo Ancelotti.
The timing of Alexander-Arnold’s injury could disrupt Madrid’s plans for the Champions League and domestic league matches.
Alonso now faces the challenge of adjusting his squad to address these defensive issues. Squad rotation and tactical changes will be crucial to maintain stability at the back.
Alexander-Arnold has failed to impress since joining Madrid, and this latest setback could impact his hopes of establishing himself with the club.
