Alexia Putellas was unveiled on 8 July 2026 as a London City Lionesses player, ending a 14-year azulgrana spell. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the two-time Ballon d'Or winner moves to England to compete in what she considers the best and most competitive league.
The announcement took place at a Kynisca event, the multi-club group owned by Michele Kang, with both on stage. Kang is casting Putellas as the emblem of an ambitious project that stretches beyond London City.
Putellas wants to keep winning and to compete every weekend, while accepting that success will be a process. Her aim is not only to play but to win.
Years of conversations with Kang and delivered promises helped build trust. The club's independence as a women-only operation was another draw, and she welcomed the personal challenge.
Kang views the signing as transformative, anticipating impact on the pitch and greater fan engagement. She wants supporters turning up every week as the club builds its own model without comparisons to the men's game.
Putellas welcomes a new chapter, dismissing suggestions she has nothing left to prove. She frames competition as her passion, pushing daily to improve and to give her best to team, club and supporters.
London offers a step outside her comfort zone within a competitive, women-first, independent project that seeks sustainability. The intention is to show a women-only club can grow and be profitable.
