Austria took the lead before the half hour mark through Marko Arnautovic. Algeria responded on the brink of half time through fullback Rafik Belghali.

Marcel Sabitzer would put Austria ahead for the second time in the game. Only for this goal to be cancelled out five minutes later by Riyad Mahrez who scored after a fantastic piece of skill from Houssem Aouar.

With mere minutes left to play Houssem Aouar slid the ball into Mahrez’s path again and he fired it past Alexander Schlager in the Austrian goal. Algeria took the lead for the first time and had potentially sent Austria home in the dying minutes.

However, like the pattern of the game Austria responded in the final moment of the game. A deep cross was floated to the back post and put back across goal before Sasa Kalajdzic scored with his first touch of the game.

As it happened

Both teams would qualify for the knockout stages with a draw and the first 25 minutes very much felt that way. It was cagey and felt as though both sides were feeling each other out.

However, Austria got the breakthrough via two of their oldest and most experienced players. David Alaba played a long ball in behind from the back line. It bounced into the path of Red Star striker Marko Arnautovic.

The Austrian man timed his run to perfection before making a good first touch to set himself. As the Algerian keeper came out to close him, Arnautovic rolled it round him in an unusual manner.

With five minutes left to play in the half, Algeria came close to an equaliser. Farѐs Chaїbi thundered an effort off f he woodwork. It was a fantastic left footed strike curling away from Alexander Schalger in the Austrian goal

On the stroke of halftime Algeria got the all-important equaliser. They rode their luck as a long ball over the top appeared to be going out until it struck the corner flag. This simultaneously took an Austrian defender out of the game

Rafik Belghali was first on the scene, and he cut inside from the right-wing then dummied and jinxed his way into greater space. Belghali fired home after a brilliant direct run into the box and Algeria are going into the knockout phases as it stands.

It was Austria who put themselves on the front foot in the second half as they retook the lead. Borussia Dortmund’s Marcel Sabitzer finishing off a devastating counterattack.

Konrad Laimer found himself with space to run into before cutting it back to Sabitzer who finished expertly first time.

However, the North African side responded again. Just five minutes after going 2-1 down, Houssem Aouar produced some magic on the left allowing him to sweep the ball back across the box.

The ball ran through everyone until Mahrez met it at the back post. He made no mistake and Algeria responded once again to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Having not gone ahead all game, in the third minute of additional time Algeria took the lead for the first time. A combination of Aouar and Mahrez delivered the killer blow again.

One ball from Aouar splitting the Austrian defence and allowing Mahrez the space and time to slide the ball past Schlager.

However, just as the Algerian’s had responded to being pegged back numerous times, it was the turn of Austria to do so. In the sixth minute of additional time as elimination loomed, they equalised.

A deep cross was floated into the box which Michael Gregoritsch headed back the way it came. This left the goal at the mercy of Sasa Kalajdzic who scored with his first touch and saved Austria with the final kick of the game.

Both Austria and Algeria advance to the Round of 32 after the points were shared in late fashion. Austria will now face Spain whilst Algeria will play Switzerland.
