Nabil Bentaleb's absence from Algeria's squad for AFCON 2025 came as a surprise, even though the midfielder was no longer an undisputed starter under Vladimir Petkovic. With his experience and recent resurgence at Lille, the 31-year-old seemed to have strong arguments for a call-up.

At a press conference, the coach stood by what he called a purely sporting decision.
