Algeria face Austria at Kansas City Stadium in the early hours of Sunday morning, needing a win to secure second place in Group J and take control of their own knockout destiny.
Three points from their comeback victory over Jordan leave the Fennecs third on goal difference behind Austria. A win guarantees second place outright and sets up a round of 32 tie. A draw likely keeps them alive as a best third-place qualifier, but Vladimir Petkovic will want more than to leave it to chance.
Mohamed Amoura remains absent. The Wolfsburg striker has not played since coming off in the group’s opening match against Argentina with a hamstring problem. His absence removes Algeria’s top scorer from the tournament. Amoura netted 10 of their 24 qualifying goals.
However, the attacking unit has coped without him. Against Jordan, Amine Gouiri scored the decisive winner, and Nadhir Benbouali netted the equaliser, both entering as half-time substitutes.
Petkovic is expected to hand both men starting roles in place of the duo they replaced — Ramiz Zerrouki, who made an error leading to Jordan’s opener, and Hicham Boudaoui.
Nabil Bentaleb, the experienced former Tottenham and Schalke midfielder, takes the defensive midfield position alongside Benbouali. Riyad Mahrez continues in his wide right role, with Fares Chaibi on the left.
Ibrahim Maza, 19 years old and one of the most talked-about young players at this tournament, operates in the number ten position. Amine Gouiri leads the line. Luca Zidane — son of Zinedine — continues in goal behind a back four of Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini and Ait-Nouri.
Algeria possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Zidane; Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini, Ait-Nouri; Bentaleb, Benbouali; Mahrez, Maza, Chaibi; Gouiri
The match will be broadcast live on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
