Algeria’s decision to face Guatemala in a March friendly has sparked debate as the team steps up preparations for World Cup 2026.

Why the Guatemala match is being questioned

The choice of Algeria to play Guatemala in a friendly next month has raised doubts among fans and observers about the value of the fixture.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed that the national team will hold training camp in Italy from 23 March to 31 March as part of preparations for FIFA World Cup 2026.

The camp will include two friendly matches aimed at testing the squad.

Algeria will first face Guatemala on 27 March at Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa. Four day later, the team will play Uruguay at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

Strong test vs Uruguay, doubts over Guatemala

While the Uruguay match is widely seen as strong and useful test, the Guatemala fixture has been met with skepticism.

According to Africa Soccer, many believe the level of the Central American side does not match the standards Algeria may face at the World Cup.

Guatemala are ranked 94th in the FIFA rankings and have limited history in major tournaments. Their most notable achievement remains winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1967, more than five decades ago.

Big gap on paper and on the pitch

The difference between the two team is clear in several areas. Guatemala’s total squad market value is estimated at around €6 million, compared to nearly €230 million for Algeria.
