Aliou Cissé has quit as Libya head coach, confirming his exit on Wednesday, eight days after the end of the last international break. He took charge in March 2025.
The coach said in an Instagram post that he was stepping down, thanking his players and staff and saying he was proud of their work and results, without giving reasons for the abrupt decision.
Cissé spent nine years with Senegal from 2015 to 2024 and led them to their first continental title at AFCON 2021, before moving to lead Libya.
He oversaw 10 matches with the 112th-ranked side in FIFA’s standings, recording three wins, five draws and two defeats.
Initially contracted until 2027, he was unable to take the Knights of the Mediterranean to the 2026 World Cup, finishing third in African qualifying Group D with nine points from six games. The 50-year-old, named African coach of the year in 2022, is now out of contract.
