Sunderland are just under a month into the summer window with no new arrivals, as they prepare for a first ever Europa League campaign. There is acceptance that Regis Le Bris’ squad must be strengthened to manage a heavier schedule.

According to Sunderland Echo, the only confirmed business is Harrison Jones joining Peterborough United and Milan Aleksic moving on loan to Partizan. Dennis Cirkin, Dan Neil, Bertrand Traore and Niall Huggins became free agents on Wednesday when their contracts expired.

The main talking point is captain Granit Xhaka, who continues to be linked with Premier League rivals. Sunderland have rejected an £8m offer for the former Arsenal midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether the Blues will return with a significantly increased bid.
