Chelsea broke their transfer record to win the race to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa this summer.

Xabi Alonso’s side won the race to land the 23-year-old despite not qualifying for any European competition next season, unlike their competitors Arsenal, who had shown interest and held talks for the attacker. But they opted not to meet Villa’s asking price, which opened the door for the Blues.

He becomes their second signing under Alonso, who penned a four-year contract to succeed Liam Rosenior as manager, after the arrival of Marco Palestra from Serie A club Atalanta. Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda completed their moves following the pre-agreements in place.

Rogers, who represented England at the World Cup, scored 10 goals and contributed seven assists in 37 Premier League appearances last season for Aston Villa, offering Chelsea a boost in their attacking options - adding to the likes of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Estevao, Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens.

He will be pushing to start under Alonso, who proved instrumental in Rogers’ decision to join Chelsea after a phone call with the Spaniard to discuss the finer details of how he would fit in.

"I’ve had a few conversations with him,” Rogers said on Alonso. “It’s important for me to be here that I need to understand what the manager’s like, how he is, how he wants to operate. It very much fits with the way I see the game.”

Chelsea are understood to have paid a fee of £117 million for Rogers, which is all guaranteed and includes no add-ons.

Rogers has penned a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge, signing an initial six-year deal until June 2032, with the option of a further year.

When Morgan Rogers could make first Chelsea appearance

After participating in the World Cup, Rogers will depart on holiday and miss Chelsea’s tour of Australia and Asia. He is set to return once the Blues return to England, which could see him feature in their final pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad on August 15 at Stamford Bridge.

His competitive debut for the club could come on August 24 when they face Fulham in their 2026/27 Premier League opener.
