Álvaro Carreras is said to have clashed with Álvaro Arbeloa after Real Madrid’s 4-2 loss to Benfica in the Champions League. AS reports that the exchange followed the defeat and centred on his role in the games that came next.
The argument is understood to have flared when Carreras, formerly of Benfica, was left out of the starting XI against Rayo Vallecano, the only player dropped from the previous line-up, and he confronted the coach.
The report says the discussion ended with Arbeloa telling him to qualify as a coach if he wanted to pick the team, adding that for now he is in charge.
This was not the first flashpoint since his arrival at the Bernabéu. There had reportedly been a disagreement with Antonio Rüdiger, which allegedly culminated in a slap during a Valdebebas training session.
Tensions grew further when television cameras caught Carreras laughing as Arbeloa sent on Fran García against Espanyol, leaving him on the bench again. The reaction was not well received by the staff.
Despite that, Carreras returned to the line-up in the last round, helping Madrid beat Real Oviedo 2-0 at the Bernabéu. Even so, reports continue to suggest a delicate dressing-room mood.
