AC Milan are ready to make a move to reunite Ruben Amorim with Amad as two more clubs join the race for the Manchester United winger, according to a new report.

Wing Wizard

Amad, 24, was consistently one of the best performers during Amorim’s ill-fated 14 months as head coach at Old Trafford, despite having been converted into a wing-back.

The Ivory Coast international, who was excellent for Les Elephants at the World Cup in North America, adapted well to the unfamiliar role, thanks to his potent pairing of skill on the ball and dogged work-rate off it.

However, Amad was not able to replicate the same level of performance under Michael Carrick, who took charge of the side as interim coach in the wake of Amorim’s dismissal in January.

Carrick favoured the Abidjan native on the right wing at the start of his tenure, with Bryan Mbeumo deployed as a false nine. However, he pushed Mbeumo back out wide to make room for Benjamin Sesko centrally, with Amad dropping to the bench as a result.

With the return of Champions League football next season, as well as the hope of deeper runs in the domestic cup competitions, Carrick will need a much larger squad to be able to compete on four fronts.

Both the coaching staff and the executive structure are understood to rate Amad highly, considering him a key player. There is no intention for him to depart this summer – a view matched by the No.16 himself.

Nonetheless, this has not deterred suitors from keeping a close eye on the situation in M16, hoping to strike if there is a change of heart – by player or club.

AC Milan joined by two Premier League rivals

Having appointed Amorim as head coach last month, AC Milan want to sign Amad to provide the former Sporting CP manager with a new wing-back. Serie A was the league in which Amad made his first foray into football after coming through Atalanta’s academy before signing for United.

Caught Offside reveals that Milan have identified United’s winger as one of their “priority attacking targets” – and are willing to test the Red Devils’ “determination to keep him.”

“AC Milan officially confirmed Amorim’s appointment on 16th June, highlighting his reputation for developing young players and building teams with a clear tactical identity. His previous relationship with Amad could give Milan an advantage if negotiations begin,” the report states.

Milan are said to be “preparing a financially controlled proposal rather than an enormous bid, which may not be enough to convince United.”

With Amad’s contract at Old Trafford running until 2030, having signed a five-year extension in January 2025, INEOS’s position is secure. It is claimed it would take only an “exceptional offer” for their minds to be changed.

Interestingly, Caught Offside also mentions Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United as two other clubs who have joined the race. Both are understood to be “monitoring developments” in hopes of escalating their interest should the opportunity present itself.

Final Thoughts

While the financial strength of the Premier League means either Brighton or Newcastle could table big-money proposals for Amad, there is no chance Manchester United will sell to a direct competitor in England. Conversely, the appeal of a footballing giant, at least historically, like AC Milan could appeal, but the economic state of Italian football rules out the possibility of an “exceptional offer”.
