Ruben Amorim has said Manchester United’s clash with Southampton will teach him more about his players than recent fixtures at Liverpool and Arsenal.
Manchester United host Southampton on Thursday encouraged by improved performances in recent games. After battling to a draw at Premier League leaders Liverpool, United dumped Arsenal out of the FA Cup at the weekend. The Red Devils progressed on penalties despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men after Diogo Dalot’s red card.
Amorim has now challenged his players to deliver that level consistently. Next up is a Southampton side who are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table. The United boss believes he will learn more about the attitude of his players tomorrow than in the previous two games.
“This next game will teach me more about my players than the last two,” he said at his pre-match press conference.
“There is no expectation in the last two games. Against Arsenal we waited for the opportunity. In the future we can’t play like that and I know that. Fans will expect more tomorrow. We have to deliver.”
Amorim also faced questions on why Manchester United have struggled in recent campaigns. Asked whether outside pressure had played its part in under performance, Amorim said expectations have significantly reduced at Old Trafford over the last decade. He called upon his side to return to a level where success is expected.
“Of course you feel the pressure of the club but in this moment, I don’t feel that pressure.
“In the last years we haven’t won the league. In the past here, if you didn’t win the league one year you would have to win it the next. I don’t feel that pressure.
“We have to bring that pressure to us because outside the fans are amazing. I don’t feel that pressure, I just want to win. To feel that pressure in the future we need to win – we need to win titles and we need to win games.”
