Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim says his side’s 4-3 defeat to Brentford was an important learning curve for his youngsters – but warned his squad that they “cannot do this anymore” after this season.
Amorim named the club’s third-youngest ever team in the Premier League for the defeat, with one eye on the crucial Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club on Thursday.
Mason Mount had scored an early opener for United before Brentford raced into a 4-1 lead thanks to goals from Mikkel Damsgaard, a double from Kevin Schade, and then Yoane Wissa.
Alejandro Garnacho and Amad set up a nervous ending for the Bees but United were unable to rescue a point, and Amorim says it is important that his players know that these type of defeats cannot continue into next season.
“It’s really important,” he said. “This season it is really important to understand that we cannot do this anymore.
“Of course we know the context but this kind of season, we need to change that. They need to understand what it is to play for Manchester United.
“I think they (the young players) did really well. They are not playing so much but they have to play 90 minutes because we have to change some other players to save them for Thursday.”
This was United’s 16th league defeat of the season and Amorim believes their loss at the Gtech Community Stadium summed up their domestic campaign.
“I think it’s a little bit the reflection of our season,” he said.
“We start quite well, controlling the game, not creating big chances but controlling the pace of the game.
“We suffered a lot from throw-ins and set-pieces but we already knew our team would struggle against this team because we didn’t have the height necessary for this kind of game.
“They score twice in these kind of moments, even with Mathjis (De Ligt) on the floor.
“In the second half I felt we were near the draw, then we suffer a goal and like some other times, we disconnect. Then another goal a few minutes later.
“Then we pushed forward, scored twice, but didn’t have the time to do better.”
