Germany were shockingly eliminated from the World Cup on Monday, losing to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32.
After the defeat, German World Cup winner Jürgen Klinsmann delivered a scathing verdict on the performance, calling it embarrassing.
“It's a very sad day for all of us in Germany because we didn't expect to go out in the round of 32. The way we went out is hugely disappointing. It seemed like the team wasn't prepared to take control of matters during the 120 minutes," Klinsmann told ESPN, adding:
"They were not energetic, decisive and aggressive enough to win this battle with a very strong Paraguay team, which we knew was going to be difficult.
“It looked like they were not prepared for penalty shoot, which is insane, because we usually love penalty shootouts. The way we went out is devastating, an embarrassment and something that nobody expected. It's pretty much as horrible as the [group-stage] exits were in Qatar four years ago and in Russia enough years ago. This takes Germany into a huge hole.”
Klinsmann believes a full-scale analysis is now required.
“Everything from the top to the bottom needs to be questioned and discussed, and obviously there will be consequences."
