James Milner has retired after a 24-year career, with former Leeds United teammates praising him as an example to all.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the announcement came in an emotional Instagram post on Monday. The 40-year-old finishes with 658 Premier League appearances, having become the competition’s record appearance-maker earlier this year. His honours include three Premier League titles and the Champions League, plus multiple domestic cups.

Former Leeds trio Jonathan Woodgate, Ian Harte and Robbie Keane sent messages of congratulations, with Woodgate describing him as a model for players. Harte recalled being involved in Milner’s debut, a 4-3 win at West Ham in November 2002. Promotion-winning captain Liam Cooper also hailed his standards.

Well-wishers from beyond Elland Road added their praise, among them Frank Lampard and Harry Wilson.

In his post, Milner reflected on starting at Leeds at 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer. He thanked every club he represented, including Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, Brighton and a month at Swindon, and expressed gratitude to team-mates, staff and supporters.

He looked back on survival battles, trophies, European campaigns and major tournaments with England, highlighting friendships made along the way. Milner closed by thanking fans and his family, saying he leaves the game with pride and gratitude.
