Ethan Pinnock slotted seamlessly into a rock-solid Brentford backline as the Bees edged to within three points of the Champions League places with a draw at Leeds United on Saturday.

The 32-year-old turned in a brilliant display at the heart of the Bees' defence, as Keith Andrews’ switch to a back five inspired his side to an eighth Premier League clean sheet of the season.

Chances were at a premium throughout a competitive stalemate at Elland Road and, afterwards, Andrews said his side had defended their own box in "sensational" fashion.

Brentford's head coach spoke about returning to basics after the rollercoaster 4-3 win over Burnley at the end of February, and significant strides have been made defensively since then, with shutouts against Bournemouth and now Leeds.

Seventh in the table with seven games remaining, the Bees are firmly in the mix for European qualification - and Pinnock's commanding display was the latest example of the strength and depth within Andrews’ squad.

In only his fourth Premier League start of the campaign, the Jamaica international posted outstanding numbers, finishing with the highest Playmaker rating (7.6) of any Brentford player.

A key figure in FA Cup wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Macclesfield in 2026, Brentford are yet to concede a goal with Pinnock in the side this year, and he made more clearances (11) than any player on the pitch at Elland Road.

The former non-league centre-back also impressed in possession, recording the best pass completion rate (88 per cent) of any Brentford player.

Leeds fired off 14 shots in total, but - in keeping with Brentford's 2025/26 defensive trends - only four (29 per cent) hit the target, with Caoimhín Kelleher dealing comfortably with those.

This season, only Arsenal (72), Manchester City (100) and Manchester United (109) have conceded fewer shots on target than Brentford (113), with the Bees allowing just 3.65 per game on average.

Pinnock and fellow defender Nathan Collins actually recorded the Bees' only two shots on target at Leeds, with their centre-forward putting in an epic defensive shift. Fresh from his call-up to the Brazilian national team, Igor Thiago was unable to add to his 19-goal Premier League haul, but he was still hugely influential.

Dominant in the air with 12 aerial duels won, more than any player from either side, Thiago also recorded the joint-most tackles (three), while no player blocked more shots (two). He also showcased his creative instincts with two key passes to round off a tireless performance.

Called up by Carlo Ancelotti for Brazil’s forthcoming friendlies against France and Croatia, Thiago will put his pursuit of Brentford’s Premier League scoring record on hold temporarily as he heads off on international duty.

Six-pointers against European rivals Everton and Fulham await the Bees and their returning internationals after Easter.

With their centre-forward hitting new heights and their defence going from strength to strength, Brentford can attack their Premier League run-in with a spring in their step.
