Liverpool have a problem, and Andoni Iraola has not tried to dress it up. Mohamed Salah has gone, the attack needs reinforcements and the club are actively working on a major move to fix it.
The new Liverpool head coach has made the situation clear. Speaking about the shape of his squad ahead of the new season, Iraola admitted the obvious. Salah’s output cannot be replaced in a neat, tidy way. It will require a different profile, a different idea and, very likely, a significant transfer fee.
Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Iraola said: “We need someone in that area but probably will have different skills [than Mo Salah]”. He added: “He can maybe complement the team in another way and we are working on it definitely!”.
That is the headline. Liverpool need a winger, and they know it. Victor Munoz has arrived from Osasuna and may prove useful over the course of a long season, but nobody should confuse squad depth with a front-line solution. Losing Salah changes the entire attacking structure.

Iraola appears realistic about that. He is not chasing a copy of Salah because there is no such thing on the market. Liverpool now need someone who can shift the dynamic, stretch defences and grow into a central role in the side.
Yan Diomande had been viewed as a serious option earlier in the window, but that route has gone cold after the Ivorian turned Liverpool down. So the recruitment team must move quickly and decisively.
There are alternatives. Ibrahim Mbaye is one name that fits the brief, young, high ceiling, available this summer. Whether Liverpool push that deal hardest remains to be seen, but the need is obvious and the manager has confirmed the club are on it.
This is now one of the defining pieces of Liverpool transfer news. Replace the right profile in attack and the team has a chance to evolve. Miss, and the burden on the rest of the forward line becomes severe. Iraola has said enough. Liverpool are working on a big one.
