Andre Grey previews Brentford B's Premier League Cup opener against Exeter City | OneFootball

Brentford B take on Exeter City Under-21s in the Premier League Cup on Tuesday 30 September (7pm kick-off BST) at St James Park.

The clash will be a Group E opener for the young Bees as the Premier League Cup finalists from last season look to get their campaign off in style.

Brentford B midfielder Andre Grey is relishing the opportunity, and insists the group is determined to go one step further this time around.

“We love this competition,” Grey explained. “Last year showed just how far we can go as a group, and reaching the final gave everyone belief in what we’re capable of.

"Of course, losing at the last hurdle was not a good feeling, but it’s something we can use as motivation to push even harder this season. The aim is to go one better and lift the trophy.”

The Bees’ run to the final last season was filled with impressive performances against a range of opposition, something Grey believes has left the team battle-hardened for the challenges that lie ahead in Group E.

“It’s never easy in this competition because you come up against so many strong academies, but that’s what makes it so special,” he continued.

“Every game tests you in a different way - physically, tactically, and mentally. It’s exactly the kind of challenge we want as young players who are developing and looking to prove ourselves.”

The opener against Exeter City promises to be a tricky start, and Grey recognised the threat their opponents will pose.

“Exeter will be a tough game,” he said. “For us, it’s about making sure we do the basics well, stay organised, and then play with the attacking energy that we know we have.

"We want to get on the ball, create chances, and really impose our style on the game.”

For Grey, the competition is also about growth.

“As a group, we’ve already shown how much we’ve developed since the start of the season,” he added.

“Games like this are a chance to show that again and build momentum. We want to compete, we want to attack, and we want to show everyone the quality we have in this squad.”

Last time out against Exeter City

Brentford B last faced Exeter City U21s in the PL Cup round of 16 last season, edging out the young Grecians 1-0.

Isaac Holland struck the decisive goal on the hour mark to send Brentford into the quarter-final.

Chances were limited, and a similarly tight contest can be expected this time around, with Exeter already collecting three points in the competition thanks to a 1-0 win over Luton Town U21s.
