Onana, who currently plies his trade at Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor on loan from United, has lined up between the sticks for the Indomitable Lions as recently as November 13, when he started in a 1-0 defeat by the DR Congo.

He has been a fixture for Trabzonspor, too, keeping three clean sheets in ten appearances since making his move late in the summer transfer window.

But Onana, capped 53 times by his country to date, will not be present at AFCON as Cameroon chase a first title since 2017.

In his place, Cameroon have called on Dinamo Bucharest’s Devis Epassy, Montpellier’s Simon Ngapandouetnbu, and Simon Omossola, who plies his trade in the DRC. Edouard Sombang completes the Lions’ four-strong goalkeeper union.

Onana’s Man United team-mate Bryan Mbeumo has made the side, as has prolific Villarreal striker Karl Etta Eyong. Carlos Baleba of Brighton has also made the plane.

Cameroon’s camp is already in a state of flux, though, after head coach Marc Brys parted ways with Fecafoot on Monday.

Elsewhere, Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa will not represent DR Congo. He moved to Tyneside from Brentford in the summer but has been sidelined all season by a knee injury - he has since returned to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly, but will remain at St James Park this month to continue his recovery.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah will join up with Man City’s Omar Marmoush in the Egypt camp.

High-flying Sunderland are set to lose seven players to the tournament - Morocco winger Chemsdine Talbi, Senegal midfielder Habib Diarra, Mozambique full-back Reinildo, Ivory Coast winger Simon Adingra, Burkina Faso forward Bertrand Traore and DR Congo pair Arthur Masuaku and Noah Sadiki. All are expected to be present for the Tyne and Wear Derby on December 14, though.

Wolves, who are not necessarily soaring, are due to lose five players: Marshall Munetsi, Tawanda Chirewa, Emmanuel Agbadou, Tolu Arokodare, and Jackson Tchatchoua.

Nigeria are yet to reveal their squad, with Eric Chelle expected to announce his side in the coming days.
