Andy Robertson is reportedly open to leaving Liverpool in the summer transfer window amid interest from Atletico Madrid.
Fabrizio Romano claimed on Saturday that the Spanish outfit have made the left-back a “top target” as they prepare for the departures of Reinildo Mandava and Cesar Azpilicueta.
The Scotland international is seen as the “ideal candidate” inside the club and consider his signing a “priority”.
Romano has provided an update on the situation, reporting that Robertson is “keen” on the move and “initial talks” have already gotten underway.
AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez had been linked with a return to the club where he began his career, but The Athletic claim that Atletico have “opted not to pursue a deal” for the France international.
Three other Premier League left-backs are on Madrid’s radar, according to Fichajes. It’s claimed they are looking at Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko, Lucas Digne of Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell.
Robertson is heading into the final year of his current contract and faces reduced minutes next season with the imminent arrival of Bournemouth full-back Milos Kerkez.
While on international duty recently, the 31-year-old recognised that he will have a battle on his hands to retain his starting berth.
“When you play for a big club like Liverpool you expect challenges, you expect to have competition, I’ve always faced that and so has everyone in their own positions,” he said.
“We want the club to be ambitious, they’re doing that and wherever we fit into that, if you’re happy with the role you stay and do it and if you’re not then I’m sure there will be some people out the door as well. That’s the nature of football.”
