Ange Postecoglu Sacked

So much for the “my story always ends with silverware” trope. After his eighth consecutive Nottingham Forest game without a win, breaking a century-old record, Ange Postecoglu survived less than twenty minutes after the final whistle.

On September 9th, I wrote this upon the news that he had replaced ousted Nuno Espiríto Santo: “Ange Postecoglu stood apart. His narrowed eyes observed the ritual dispassionately. He had been here before. A grinning Marinakis approached him, fixed a Forest pin to his suit lapel and whispered in his ear. Ange allowed himself a wan smile. Looking past the bulk of his new boss, his gaze fell upon the Altar of Progress. There was still plenty of room for one more name.” To be fair, it’s not even clear that ‘Big Ange’ will have his name engraved on Nottingham Forest’s altar (read more here).

Ange now sits second on an unwanted list: Shortest tenured managers in the Premier League. His 40 days in charge match that of Charlton Athletic’s notorious Les “Míserables” Reed (Nov.-Dec. 2006). Sam Allardyce (another larger-than-life figure whose name is prefaced with “big”) holds the records at 30 days with Leeds United back in May-June 2023.

“Set Pieces, Why’d it have to be Set Pieces?”

Nottingham Forest lost today’s match against Chelsea 3 – 0. The team looked in fine form in the first half, but squandered any chances at goal and entered the locker room on zeroes. Tellingly, all three second half goals were the result of set pieces. Overall, 11 of the 18 goals conceded in his tenure came from dead balls. As you may recall, Ange has a very public disdain for set pieces. Even if many of his juicer comments were taken out of context, it’s a label that’s stubbornly stuck to the Australian.

If the opposite of a superlative is a craperlative, then I don’t have enough words to do proper justice to the turmoil and chaos Evangelos Marinakis unleashed upon this hapless club. What hurts the most is how unnecessary this all was. Nuno was doing fine. His crime was not sucking up to the Greek. But ‘Big Ange’ proved that even friendship and sharing a common language can’t protect you from incompetence.
