SCO Angers’ sporting director has made a quite astounding revelation about the Ligue 1 club’s recruitment department during an interview with RMC Sport.
Angers have not spent a single penny in the transfer market this season, despite coming up from Ligue 2. They have relied solely on free transfers and loan deals. Jim Allevinah, Jean-Eudes Aholou, and Haris Belkebla were among the players to arrive at Les Scoïstes on a free transfer in the summer, whilst Bamba Dieng arrived on loan from FC Lorient, who dropped to Ligue 2 this season.
It is no secret that funds are limited at Angers, despite the sale of Yan Valery to Sheffield Wednesday for a figure just shy of €500,000. But the extent to which their recruitment team is scaled back nonetheless comes as a major surprise. Speaking at the end of the winter transfer window, during which the club failed to make a single signing, Angers’ sporting director, Laurent Boissier, told RMC Sport that he is the only person working in recruitment.
“I’m all alone! We have no recruitment cell, no data, no scouts,” he began. “I work alone in recruitment with the president and the help of Alexandre (Dujeux, manager) and his staff. I worked like that at Nîmes for five years. I arrived at Angers and it works like this too. But I don’t make the decisions all on my own. Decisions are validated by three people: the owner, the manager, and the third is me,” he added.
