Yet another EFL club has been linked with a takeover this summer

The summer has seen a number of football clubs in the EFL involved in takeovers and ownership changes, including West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls officially changed hands in May, during the final weekend of the regular campaign, with Arise Capital purchasing the Yorkshire outfit.

Meanwhile, Daniel Kretinsky has agreed to become the new majority shareholder in the Hammers, increasing his stake in the club.

And yet it might not end there, with Amanda Staveley linked with a potential bid to purchase a stake in the London outfit.

Derby County have also been the subject of reported investment interest, including from Turki Alalshikh, although no deal has yet been arranged.

And Gareth Bale has spoken about investing in a possible EFL club after being previously linked with Cardiff City.

It has been reported by Wales Online that Newport County are facing takeover interest this summer.

It’s been claimed that Nick Beddis is closing in on an agreement that will lead to him owning 52 percent of the League Two side.

The 33-year-old is the founder of AGS Capital, and the deal is believed to be worth somewhere between £5 and 10 million.

However, the deal will need the seal of approval from the Independent Football Regulator in order to go through.

It’s understood that the IFR are already overseeing the approval process, but plans are being put in place for a pre-season tour of Miami, indicating that there is optimism that it won’t take too long.

The 27 percent stake in the League Two side owned by the supporters’ trust is reportedly unaffected by Huw Jenkins’ agreement to sell his shares to Beddis.

How Newport County fans feel about prospective takeover

Given Newport’s struggles over the last couple of campaigns, fans are sceptical about the future of the club moving in the right direction, even under a possible new owner.

The lack of details known about Beddis has led to some fans fearing the worst before more information comes out.

However, some are opting to remain patient and wait for Beddis to reveal his plans, with the club yet to make any official announcement regarding a takeover agreement.

Newport finished just four points clear of the relegation zone last season, finishing 20th in the table.

Newport County need some kind of a change

Newport have narrowly avoided relegation in both of the last two seasons, and it’s clear they’re going nowhere fast under Jenkins.

So some kind of a change is the best path forward to bring the club in a positive direction again.

However, there are no guarantees that Beddis will bring that change, and fans have every reason to be sceptical about this takeover until more information is revealed.

Some greater transparency from the club would be very welcome at this stage, as they deserve to know what is going on, particularly with the supporters’ trust owning over a quarter of the team.

If the Miami pre-season tour is already being arranged, then that at least indicates that it won’t be long before everything is made official.
