Cole Palmer may have had something of a slump in the middle of this season, picking up a serious goal drought compared to what came before and after, but his recent showings have been utterly sublime.

The Club World Cup gave him a great chance to show his quality on a big stage, and he got better and better as the tournament went on, peaking in the final with a two goal, one assist masterclass.

On TalkSport, former Chelsea coach Jody Morris was full of praise for the attacking midfielder, while still insisting there was more to come:

“For me, he’s a superstar already, but I still think he’s got another level to go to, because I think you need to play in the Champions League for you to be considered the next level.”

“We saw what he did on the right-hand side in the Conference League final. He took it upon himself to go and right, ‘I’m going to make something happen.’ There’s a few players that can do that. We were lucky enough to have probably the best to ever do that, Eden Hazard. Cole Palmer is in that same bracket.”

Palmer has more to give when he faces the top teams

As much as we enjoyed the Conference League, it did feel like a waste of Palmer’s special talents to have him competing against teams with far smaller budgets.

We’ve seen what he can do against PSG – now we want to see that every week against the very best in the Champions League. We agree with Morris – you only know a player’s true level when they test themselves against the top teams.
