Just three days after a 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16, Chelsea endured another frustrating outing on Saturday, falling 1-0 to Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Continuing the defensive woes from their midweek humiliation in Paris, Liam Rosenior’s side were undone by more lapses as Joe Willock broke through on goal and set up Anthony Gordon to tap into an empty net 18 minutes in.
As a result, Chelsea have now kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 matches across all competitions, that coming in an FA Cup 4-0 win over Championship side Hull City.
Gordon’s strike—just his second open-play goal in 14 months—was enough to hand Newcastle all three points at Stamford Bridge, their first league win there since 2012, when Papiss Demba Cisse scored twice.
Chelsea were also beaten at home in a March Premier League fixture for the first time in 25 years, leaving them three points adrift of Manchester United and Aston Villa, who face off at Old Trafford on Sunday.
With only eight matches left to play, three of which are against Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool, Chelsea face a tough path if they are to secure a return to Europe’s premier club competition by finishing in the top four, as fifth place may not be enough to secure a place in next season’s edition.
Barring a remarkable turnaround on Tuesday night, the Blues are on the brink of exiting the 2025/26 Champions League.
