Anthony Patterson faces a major summer decision as Sunderland's goalkeeping picture shifts, despite ties to his boyhood club. According to Sunderland Echo, Robin Roefs is now first choice, leaving Patterson's route to regular football unclear.

Patterson wants a permanent home. He would favour a permanent transfer if he moves, though a loan cannot be ruled out if the market complicates matters.

Sunderland value him at £8million to £10million, while his camp hope for realism if a Championship move arises. That price may test most second-tier budgets.

Southampton are understood to be keen, but plans may hinge on Aaron Ramsdale, who has two years left on his deal. If they go up and the current Newcastle United loanee stays, that could complicate any move. Coventry City, West Brom, Hull City and Derby County are monitoring.

Patterson, 26, is an academy graduate who helped lift Sunderland from League One to the Premier League. He signed a long-term contract in September 2023 to run until 2028.

Any sale would be favourable from an SCR perspective because he is homegrown and counts as pure profit. That does not mean Sunderland will sell cheaply.

Roefs is not certain to leave, though interest has grown after a season as number one. Sunderland would only listen to a major offer, yet a departure cannot be ruled out if the right money arrives.

Some may wait to see him as a Premier League number one for another year under Régis Le Bris. If he did go, Sunderland would recruit a replacement, which could delay any Patterson exit. Patterson is not currently viewed as next season's number one. Ellborg remains comfortable cover.
