APAF, the Portuguese referees’ association, will file a disciplinary complaint against Rui Costa and Benfica after the president’s post-match comments following the draw at Famalicão, in which he strongly criticised referee Gustavo Correia.
Record writes that the complaint will go to the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation, which will review the document and decide whether to open a case.
It is considered likely the council will proceed, with APAF believing Rui Costa went too far by alleging Correia harmed Benfica’s bid to reach the Champions League.
In his remarks, Rui Costa claimed the referee had disadvantaged Benfica and suggested second place was being taken from them. He also argued that only players and coaches, not officials or institutions, should determine results.
The contentious draw prompted wider reaction around the club. Mauro Xavier, on his official X account, called for the release of the VAR audio relating to a penalty incident that was not awarded in Benfica’s favour.
