An approach has been made as Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes picks their next major signing.
Liverpool have a massive decision to make this summer. They need a new forward and someone who can somehow fill the boost of Mohamed Salah.
Though, it’s not even as simple as that. They’re also looking for their next Luis Diaz, having failed to replace the Colombian last summer.
Three names have typically done the rounds and the Daily Mail is among the outlets naming them again this week: Yan Diomande, Bradley Barcola and Anthony Gordon.
All three are in high demand. All three would be incredibly expensive. But all three also offer exactly the kind of dynamism that Liverpool lack.
It also seems that, for whatever reason, Liverpool have chosen their man. Mundo Deportivo reports that a ‘strong’ push in the last few weeks has come from Anfield for Anthony Gordon.
It’s a suggestion that Gordon is the one Liverpool feel the most comfortable about. Perhaps that’s because of his fit and Premier League-proven status. Or maybe it’s because he ticks the all-important homegrown box.
Or it could simply be that Liverpool feel Gordon is the most likely to sign. Time will tell on that one.
Newcastle Campaign and Stats
As of 27 May 2026, Anthony Gordon is heavily tipped to leave Newcastle United following a turbulent end to the season. The 25-year-old winger enjoyed a highly productive campaign, netting 17 goals across all competitions—including 10 in the Champions League, where he famously scored a historic hat-trick against Qarabağ. However, as transfer rumors intensified, Eddie Howe omitted him from the squad for Newcastle's final six Premier League matches, including a season-ending 2–0 defeat to Fulham on 24 May.
Transfer Tug-of-War
A massive European bidding war has erupted for Gordon, whom Newcastle value at roughly £75 million. Fabrizio Romano confirmed today that Spanish champions Barcelona have entered direct club-to-club talks with Newcastle, with sporting director Deco reportedly swaying the winger to prioritize a move to Camp Nou. Barcelona face stiff competition from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich—who previously agreed to personal terms with Gordon but stalled on the transfer fee—as well as long-term admirers Liverpool.
Despite his late-season club omission, Gordon has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s final England squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America.
