Álvaro Arbeloa has warned that Real Madrid must be at their “best level” when they host an in-form Real Sociedad side on Saturday, with the visitors arriving full of confidence after securing a crucial Basque derby victory in midweek.

Real Sociedad travel to the Spanish capital on the back of a 0-1 win over Athletic Club in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, where Beñat Turrientes’ decisive second-half goal handed the txuri-urdin an advantage in the tie.

Extending their unbeaten run to 11 matches, the victory underlined Real Sociedad’s impressive form under Pellegrino Matarazzo and adds further intrigue to Saturday’s league encounter as Real Madrid look to keep pace with Barcelona in the LaLiga title fight.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arbeloa said: “We know the pace Real Sociedad are playing at and how well they’re doing with their new coach, who is unbeaten after facing Barcelona and Atlético.

“We understand how difficult tomorrow’s game will be. We’ll need to perform at our best if we want the three points.”

Arbeloa, who was appointed as interim head coach following Real Madrid’s decision to part ways with Xabi Alonso last month, confirmed positive team news ahead of the fixture, revealing that Kylian Mbappé is available after returning to full training.

“Mbappé is fine. He has trained with the group and is available for tomorrow’s match,” he said.

With Real Sociedad buoyed by their midweek Copa del Rey success, Real Madrid are preparing for a demanding test. Arbeloa highlighted the importance of managing his deep squad during a busy run of matches, stressing that maintaining unity remains central to his approach.

“I have 25 players available every week,” he said. “The starting eleven is always the best for that particular match, but I like everyone to feel important because opportunities can come at any moment.”

Real Madrid v Real Sociedad kicks off at 20:00 GMT on Saturday 14 February.
