Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed Fulham head coach on Tuesday on a three-year contract running to June 2029.
The 43-year-old embarks on his second spell in a professional dugout after leading Real Madrid from January to the end of last season, replacing the dismissed Xabi Alonso. He succeeds Portuguese coach Marco Silva.
Arbeloa called the move an honour at London’s oldest club and said he feels a great responsibility. He thanked Shahid Khan and Tony Khan for their trust with Fulham in the Premier League. He looked forward to pre-season starting next week and to experiencing Craven Cottage with the fans.
He said he was confident they would enjoy an incredible experience together. His first competitive game will be at Craven Cottage against Chelsea, coached by Xabi Alonso.
Owner Shahid Khan said Arbeloa was among the initial candidates and, after June meetings, made an exceptional case to become head coach. Khan said it quickly became clear he was, and remains, the right choice. He expressed confidence the squad, staff and supporters would identify with what the appointment means for the club’s present and future.
Khan described Arbeloa as highly ambitious, with time spent among elite players, clubs and methods that will serve Fulham well. He praised the Spaniard’s commitment to the academy, belief in giving young players opportunities and intent to play attacking football. He said Arbeloa is the ideal person to lead Fulham into the coming Premier League season and beyond.
