Robert Arboleda has given Santos the nod for a potential move in the next transfer window, but talks are being held up by São Paulo’s conditions.

According to Diario Do Peixe, São Paulo want any buyer to assume a debt of approximately US$ one million owed to the defender’s agent, a stance the Santos board view as difficult at this stage.

Santos are also weighing the centre-back’s age, he turned 34, alongside recent off-field episodes as part of their assessment.

Arboleda is currently out of São Paulo’s plans and training away from the main squad after staying about a month longer than authorised on a trip to Ecuador, which strained relations with the board.

In May he formally asked to be reinstated, arguing the separation was harming his career. The club replied he was working at alternative times for physical reasons and kept the original decision.

The Ecuadorian remains under contract with São Paulo until the end of 2027, while the club look for a resolution to his future.

Vitória and Vasco have monitored the situation, though talks did not progress.

Santos believe Arboleda could add experience to their defence, yet any move hinges on a financially viable agreement. Rivalry between the clubs is seen as another obstacle, with São Paulo unlikely to ease a deal for a direct competitor.

With the player’s approval secured, Santos will consider their next steps, with a decision on feasibility expected during the World Cup pause.
