Arconada has endorsed Real Sociedad goalkeepers Alex Remiro and Unai Marrero as the club pursue another Copa, sharing penalty wisdom at Zubieta. According to Diario Vasco, the great captain met the pair with the team now in the final at La Cartuja.
The 1987 final at La Romareda went to penalties. Arconada had tracked opponents’ habits from Estudio Estadio highlights in a notebook, went the right way for four kicks and saved the decisive effort from Quique Ramos as La Real won the trophy.
Thirty-nine years on, the club want to relive that moment with their fans, this time with Remiro or Marrero in goal. Arconada said both are excellent and that Real can be proud of how well the position is covered.
Marrero was the hero against Osasuna, ending a 37-year wait to win a shootout. He studied tendencies, trusted intuition and felt little pressure because he stayed connected to the game.
Remiro’s key moment came in the quarter-finals against Alavés, saving a penalty in the 67th minute with Real 2-1 down. The taker had gone right with 18 consecutive penalties, an earlier kick had gone the other way, yet Remiro stuck to the plan and it paid off.
Real have reached La Cartuja with the dream of repeating a Cup win still alive, for Arconada as well. He recalls the long wait for the Cup, the heat and the support in Zaragoza, and notes Atlético were favourites in 1987 but La Real still brought it home.
