Argentina: a new champion... before the end of the season

An unbelievable situation is rocking Argentine football. The Federation (AFA) has suddenly changed the rules and decided to crown Rosario Central as the new national champion... while the season isn't even over yet!

Why this decision?

The Federation (AFA) chose to crown Rosario Central based on the annual table, a ranking that had never before been used to determine a champion. This rule was not clearly announced before the start of the season.

For the first time, three different clubs could be crowned champions in the same year in Argentina. It's a real puzzle that even involves a team featuring Ángel Di María. Many see this as erratic policy from the federation, which changes the rules on a whim with no warning.

A championship with three titles

Traditionally, Argentina had two champions:

  1. the Apertura (first half of the season),
  2. the Clausura (second half).

Now, a third title has been added, the one based on the annual table. It's a system that diminishes the value of the trophies and risks pitting clubs and supporters against each other.
