Argentina have selected a Brazil-based player for the first time in 20 years, with Palmeiras forward Flaco López named for the 2026 World Cup.

According to Globo.com, the 25-year-old has made Lionel Scaloni’s final squad and is set for his first World Cup.

The history of Argentina call-ups from Brazilian clubs is sparse. Cruzeiro’s Roberto Perfumo went to the 1974 World Cup, and later full-back Sorín was also chosen while at the Belo Horizonte side.

In 2006, during the tournament in Germany, coach José Pekerman selected two Corinthians players, Mascherano and Tévez.

López is only the fifth Argentine to be picked from a Brazilian team.

He has three senior caps for Argentina and has yet to score.

His Palmeiras form underpinned the call, with 14 goals and eight assists in 35 appearances this season.
