Argentina poured into the streets after a 2-1 victory over England in Atlanta, a semi-final win that put them into the World Cup final and kept the bid for back-to-back titles alive.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the whistle from US referee Ismail Elfath unleashed horns, fireworks and embraces, while the chant 'El que no salta es un inglés' echoed nationwide.

The rivalry’s history was unmistakable. Giovani Lo Celso and team-mates laid a banner reading 'Las Malvinas son argentinas', and players and crowds sang for Lionel Messi. Scaloni said his team are unique.

In Buenos Aires, the Obelisk again became the gathering point. Fans streamed in from neighbourhoods and the outskirts, many walking as transport costs bite.

Argentina are back in a final, Messi’s legend grew, and Scaloni now joins Carlos Bilardo as the only national coaches to reach two. Euphoria also invited analysis, with every supporter turning pundit.

Far-right president Javier Milei, a former Chacarita Juniors goalkeeper, said he had trusted the comeback, felt Argentina overran England after their goal, praised the substitutions and urged people to depoliticise what happened in Atlanta.

The tremor could swell on Sunday if Argentina beat Spain in New York, the human tide of 2022 perhaps finding a second chapter. There is a rumour Milei will sit alongside Donald Trump for the final, a prospect that stirs memories of Carlos Menem in 1990, long accused by many of bringing bad luck.
