Inter Milan are set to welcome Lautaro Martinez back into the starting XI for their Serie A clash with Bologna, as Cristian Chivu prepares changes for the Nerazzurri’s first official outing of 2026.
The match carries added weight. Bologna have troubled Inter in recent seasons and were also responsible for knocking Chivu’s side out of the Supercoppa Italiana on penalties in Saudi Arabia.
This time, the Inter coach is determined to respond with a stronger, more recognisable line-up.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the biggest adjustment will come in attack.

Lautaro is expected to return as the focal point of the forward line after being rested in the Supercoppa.
“Lautaro will be Chivu’s first major change for the second meeting of the season with Bologna,” the newspaper explains, underlining the captain’s importance in setting the tone.
There will also be a key reinforcement in midfield. Hakan Calhanoglu is ready to start again after missing the Supercoppa due to an adductor problem.
The Turkish playmaker completed the full 90 minutes against Atalanta.
Indeed, seeing plenty of the ball, circulating possession effectively and creating several chances.
In short, as La Gazzetta puts it, “Calhanoglu is back.”
For Chivu, these returns represent more than simple rotation.
Restoring leaders like Lautaro Martinez and Calhanoglu gives Inter greater authority and structure.
Indeed, as they look to begin the new year with a statement performance against a difficult opponent.
