Argentina vs Cape Verde sees the reigning World Cup champions take on the tournament’s newest arrivals in one of the final Round of 32 fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It is one of the most captivating David versus Goliath matchups of the tournament. Can Cape Verde, who have already stunned the reigning European champions, pull off another miracle against the defending world champions?

Argentina vs Cape Verde: The Build-Up

Lionel Scaloni’s La Albiceleste have been unstoppable in the tournament, picking up right where they left off at the 2022 World Cup Final. They didn’t concede a single goal in their opening two matches, dispatching Algeria 3-0 and then Austria with a 2-0 victory. In their final group match, despite conceding an early second-half goal, they comfortably defeated Jordan 3-1, finishing the group stage with a perfect nine points, eight goals scored, and just one conceded. Argentina haven’t lost a knockout game since the 2019 Copa America, as they prepare to take on Cape Verde in their first knockout fixture of the tournament.

Cape Verde’s presence in the Round of 32 is something no one had ever expected. No bookie, seer, not even Paul the Octopus would have imagined that Blue Sharks would be playing in the World Cup knockouts. Entering the 2026 World Cup as one of four debutants alongside Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan, few pundits gave the small island nation any chance of surviving Group H.

In their opening match against Spain, they made history by grinding out a 0-0 draw against the European champions. With heroics led by their goalkeeper Vozinha, Cape Verde earned their first-ever World Cup point. They proved they were more than just a defensive team in their second fixture, scoring their first two goals at the World Cup to secure a 2-2 draw. Needing a result in their final group game to qualify, they earned another 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, finishing second in the group with three points and an unbeaten record.

Men Who Matter: Lionel Messi

At the heart of Argentina’s title defense has once again been their main man, Lionel Messi.

Even at 39, he is currently tied with Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race at this World Cup. Only two matches in, all of Argentina’s goals had come from the boots of the iconic No. 10, who also went past Miroslav Klose’s record as the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.

The man scored a hat trick in the opener, his first World Cup hat trick ever. Then, in the following game, he followed it up with a brace, which could easily have been another hat trick had he not missed a penalty in the first half. Rested against Jordan, Messi came off the bench and scored his 72nd career free kick to break the record for most consecutive FIFA World Cup matches scored in.

In a tournament that is rightly being dominated by the next era of soccer stars in Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Vinícius Jr., all of whom are chasing the Golden Boot, there is that 39-year-old uncle still balling like he doesn’t know what year it is. While his counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t really gotten off the ground, Messi keeps reminding people why he is the greatest of all time.

Men Who Matter: Vozinha

Looking at the other end of the pitch, Cape Verde’s talisman isn’t a small, diminutive right winger, but inspirational goalkeeper Vozinha. Vozinha arrived at the World Cup as an unknown to most soccer fans but immediately introduced himself with an eight-save, Player of the Match performance in the 0-0 draw against European champions Spain. He followed that up with another outstanding performance against Uruguay, before anchoring another 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, earning Cape Verde the points needed to advance as the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage.

Across the three games, he has faced 12 shots on target and successfully saved 10 of them, according to FBref. Opta reports that Vozinha is the third goalkeeper to record multiple FIFA World Cup clean sheets after turning 40 years old, joining Peter Shilton (3) and Dino Zoff (2).

Now, going up against a team that has already scored eight goals in three games, Cape Verde will need his heroics once again to make history.

Argentina vs Cape Verde: Tactics

This is where the David vs. Goliath comparison will truly shine. Cape Verde would be foolish to go out and attack Argentina on the front foot. The best thing the Africans can most likely do is stick to what worked against Spain: sit deep, soak up pressure, leave a few runners free on the counterattack, and hope for the best.

They cannot afford to give away cheap fouls in dangerous areas, especially against a team with Messi’s set-piece ability. When they do win the ball, they must transition with speed. Captain Ryan Mendes and the pacey Dailon Livramento will be tasked with chasing down long clearances and trying to catch Argentina’s defensive line off guard. The Blue Sharks will likely concede 70 percent or more of the possession.

For Argentina, they just need to play a decent game and they are through. Barring any players forgetting their shooting boots at home or defensive lapses at the back, Argentina should comfortably dominate Cape Verde. They did concede a goal to Jordan in their last game, though, so Cape Verde will be studying the events that led to that goal to see if they can replicate them.

Team News and Predictions

Messi will return to the starting XI after being rested last game, and so will his bodyguard, Rodrigo De Paul, along with Alexis Mac Allister. This is how the expected lineup should look:

Prediction: Argentina 3 – 0 Cape Verde. Unfortunately, the fairytale most likely will conclude here. Regardless, the Blue Sharks have had a terrific campaign throughout and one that will be remembered for ages. And should they actually somehow, miraculously, beat Argentina – boy, wouldn’t that make for good cinema?
