Southampton’s charge under new manager Tonda Eckert shows no sign of slowing — and neither does Adam Armstrong.
The Championship’s top scorer moved to 11 league goals with a first-half brace in a 3–2 win over West Brom, sealing Eckert’s sixth victory in seven games since taking charge.
Armstrong’s tally makes him the most prolific striker in the EFL and one of only seven players across The 92 to have reached double figures this season. The group is headed by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland on 15, with Armstrong now level on 11 alongside Brentford forward Igor Thiago.
Just behind that trio sit the players on 10 goals: Joe Gelhardt, Carlton Morris, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Aaron Drinan.
At St Mary’s last night, Armstrong and the Saints blew West Brom away before the break. Leo Scienza opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Armstrong doubled the advantage five minutes later, stealing possession high up the pitch and finishing emphatically.
Southampton remained dominant throughout the first half, and Armstrong’s second — his seventh goal in six games — arrived via Finn Azaz’s disguised pass, allowing another precise finish into the far corner.
West Brom eventually rallied after the interval, with Karlan Grant and Nathaniel Phillips pulling goals back to inject late tension. But the deficit proved too great, and the Saints go marching on under Eckert — with Armstrong providing the ammunition.
