Arne Slot calls on Liverpool to draw on rich history to overcome mammoth PSG test | OneFootball

Arne Slot insisted Liverpool can draw on their rich history to give them hope in the troubled times of this season and said that every time they fall over, they can get back on their feet.

Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday after losing their last two games and 15 matches in all competitions, with Slot saying: “It is completely true that performances and results have been inconsistent the whole season.”

But he pointed to his team’s ability to get results against some of the better sides – with wins against Real and Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Aston Villa, among others.

And as he faces the European champions four days after his side were thrashed 4-0 by Manchester City, Slot is inspired by Liverpool’s past as he tries to turn around their season and bring about a revival in their fortunes.

Liverpool have won the European Cup six times, some after famous comebacks and one in a season when they finished 37 points behind the Premier League champions, which gives Slot hope in a difficult year.

“The answer lies in the history of Liverpool,” Slot said. “In tough moments, they stand up again. We've had a lot of tough moments, stood up a few times then fallen down again.

"We have to show that mentality again to keep going and keep picking yourself up after disappointment.

"This club has also shown it can do very special things in difficult moments and if we can bring this game to Anfield, as we saw last season and many times, most recently against Galatasaray, we played the best game of our season.

"The answer is already in the history of Liverpool but it is easier said than done. We have shown two many times the face we saw for 20 minutes at Man City. Usually it is only five or 10 minutes.

"This group has shown it can come back after setbacks. Apart from the quality my team has, my team have shown many times in big games - apart from two at the Etihad - that we are able to compete with the best teams in Europe.”

Slot said Liverpool’s record signing Alexander Isak could make his belated first appearance of 2026 at the Parc des Princes, though it would only be as a substitute.

Isak broke a leg while scoring against Tottenham in December and has undergone ankle surgery and is likely to be on the bench.

Slot added: “He has finished close to a week of team training sessions so he can play a part, otherwise I wouldn’t take him. I decided not to take him to the Etihad because we felt we could not get a performance of him yet.”
