Arne Slot responds to David Moyes after Liverpool beat Everton

Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Everton at Anfield once again underlined the gulf in fortunes between the two Merseyside clubs. For David Moyes, it was another unwelcome milestone, as the Everton manager became the coach with the longest winless streak at Anfield. His frustration, however, was not reserved for the result alone.

Moyes voiced his anger at the officials, claiming that only three minutes of added time was insufficient. He implied that refereeing decisions at Anfield remain inconsistent, yet his side’s shortcomings in the opening half left them chasing shadows long before the fourth official’s board was raised.

Slot addresses added-time debate

Arne Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first campaign, had been silent on Moyes’ comments until Monday. During a discussion with Liverpoolfc.com about the upcoming Carabao Cup tie against Southampton, Slot took the opportunity to offer his perspective on the matter.

“Yes, there will be a completely changed line-up,” said the Dutch coach. “But that our players are fit, that’s clear. Because a lot has been said about the added time against Everton but I would have loved to play on three or four seconds more because we were in a five-v-two situation at that moment.

“Now that tells you, I think, all about the mentality we have, always wanting to score a goal.”

Slot went further, stressing that the officials were correct in their calculations. “The three minutes were completely correct, by the way, because there were only three moments where a substitution was made. There was no time-wasting because that’s not what we do – unfortunately, I have to say, sometimes – and there was no treatment of injuries, one goal scored.

“Then you come to three [minutes]. Where in many other games when we need a goal, there’s a lot, a lot, a lot of time-wasting going on, I can tell you.”

His answer was a pointed but measured rebuttal, emphasising Liverpool’s attacking drive rather than dwelling on Moyes’ complaints.

Squad rotation for Southampton clash

Attention now turns quickly to the Carabao Cup, where Liverpool host Southampton. Slot confirmed he will rotate heavily, with several players set for opportunities.

“These are the players that need a game and we’re happy that we have one,” said Slot. “If we wouldn’t have had one, we probably would have arranged a friendly in this week for these players because they need to play games as well to keep them ready whenever we need them.

“We’ve used quite a lot in the last three games because we thought we needed to keep this energy throughout all the three games – but not all of them. And the few we haven’t used, it’s definitely the perfect moment for them to get playing time.”

For Liverpool supporters, the excitement will be twofold. The chance to progress in the competition remains important, but so too is seeing how Slot manages his squad. With the Premier League campaign already off to a perfect start, the manager’s handling of rotation could prove vital later in the season.

Moyes and Slot set different tones

Moyes, still searching for answers to his team’s poor record at Anfield, framed his disappointment around stoppage time. Slot, in contrast, highlighted mentality, fitness and forward momentum. It was a reminder of how Liverpool’s new head coach is shaping the culture at Anfield, while Moyes continues to confront old frustrations without solutions.
