Arsenal’s 1-0 win at West Ham on Sunday ensured Nottingham Forest and Leeds United will stay in the Premier League. NY Times notes the result leaves West Ham and 17th-placed Tottenham battling to avoid joining Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship.
Forest drew 1-1 with Newcastle earlier to move seven points clear with two matches left, while Leeds were confirmed safe without playing. Leeds are also seven points clear before Monday’s trip to Spurs.
West Ham thought they had levelled in stoppage time through Callum Wilson, but VAR Darren England prompted an on-field review. Referee Chris Kavanagh then disallowed it for a foul on goalkeeper David Raya by West Ham’s Pablo.
A draw would have left Forest and Leeds still at risk, albeit only via a major goal difference swing, with the sides on -2 and -5 and West Ham starting at -19.
Forest head coach Vitor Pereira said he would not watch West Ham, stressing they could only control their own results. He felt his side could claim more points and noted an eight-match unbeaten league run.
Forest finish against Manchester United and Bournemouth.
Leeds face Brighton & Hove Albion then West Ham after Spurs. West Ham visit Newcastle next Sunday, while Tottenham go to Chelsea on 19 May before hosting Everton.
