The transfer situation involving Blackburn Rovers wonderkid Igor Tyjon potentially going to Arsenal this month has been labelled "a weird one".

This follows a report from The Athletic that states the aforementioned move could happen this January after the Gunners' advances for the 17-year-old were 'rebuffed' in the summer.

Rovers boss Valerien Ismael confirmed to The Lancashire Telegraph that negotiations to extend Tyjon's current scholarship contract have broken down, with the young forward declining to put pen to paper on a new deal.

We asked FLW's Rovers Fan Pundit, Simon Middlehurst, for his thoughts on the situation, and whether it'd be a huge blow if Tyjon did eventually end up leaving for the Premier League.

Blackburn Rovers striker Igor Tyjon's "weird" potential transfer to Arsenal

What makes this situation weird from a Blackburn supporter's perspective is the genuine uncertainty surrounding just how good Tyjon actually is at this stage of his development.

The teenager has barely featured in the senior setup because of his apparent refusal to sign a new contract, leaving those like Middlehurst without a clear assessment of whether he is a generational talent or an exciting prospect who needs more time to develop.

Middlehurst told FLW: "Yeah It looks like he’s going to be on his way out. He’s not signing a professional contract at Blackburn, he’s still been involved in the squad the last few games.

"Would it be a huge blow if he does depart? It’s a weird one, because we haven’t really seen much of him to make much of a judgement," the Fan Pundit added.

As for the potential transfer with Arsenal, the North London side have held a sustained interest in Tyjon for 18 months, according to The Sun, having made multiple bids for the striker last summer that were rejected by Rovers - believed to be over the £1m mark.

Igor Tyjon could've "stayed" at Blackburn Rovers "a bit longer"

In the Premier League 2 this season, Tyjon has three goals and one assist in just three appearances. Yet without substantial minutes in senior football, it obviously remains difficult for Middlehurst to make a judgement.

"He hasn’t really played much in the first team, I don’t think he’s played much in the U21’s because he’s been away with the international side," Middlehurst continued on Tyjon.

During the U17 World Cup for England in November, the striker spent every single match on the bench, according to FotMob.

This is perhaps why Middlehurst concluded by saying, "So, it’s a weird one. He’s one of these players who could potentially come good, but maybe if he stayed at Blackburn a bit longer and developed we could get a bit more of a feel for him."

Back in October, Ismael claimed to The Lancashire Telegraph again that Tyjon "is not ready for us right now" - which was before the contract dilemma that saw him change those words to "that's why we are focused now on the players who are for us, for the future."

Ultimately, it seems as though Tyjon was always destined to leave Lancashire, and that more consistent first-team opportunities probably wouldn't have changed this.

Without seeing him perform in consistent first-team action this season, supporters are probably only left thinking ‘what might have been’, as Middlehurst claims - the whole situation is "weird".
