Arsenal are considering activating the £5m release clause in the contract of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Gunners want to sign a new goalkeeper as cover and competition for David Raya. Arsenal had been interested in Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, but the Spaniard is instead set to sign for Barcelona. Veteran goalkeeper Neto has returned to Bournemouth after his loan spell at Arsenal last season.

Kepa has now emerged as a viable option. The 30-year-old spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, replacing Neto, and impressed for Andoni Iraola’s side.

He ranked fourth in the Premier League for save percentage (71.9%) in 2024/25 and sixth overall for expected goals prevented.

The Spain international spent the previous season on loan at Real Madrid, having failed to live up to expectations since a world-record move to Chelsea in 2018.

Sky Sports are reporting that Arsenal have held initial talks with Chelsea to discuss the conditions of a deal. Kepa is understood to have a £5m release clause, a figure that is seen as good value. He signed a one-year extension last summer to protect his value before joining Bournemouth on loan. Chelsea paid a world-record £71.6m to sign the goalkeeper from Athletic Bilbao seven years ago.

Kepa could become the latest player to make the move from Chelsea to Arsenal. The Gunners have signed Jorginho, Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling from their London rivals in recent transfer windows.
