Fresh from their sensational Premier League title triumph, Arsenal are preparing for another busy summer and could revive their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Mikel Arteta remains an admirer of the 26-year-old, having previously attempted a late move to bring him from St James’ Park to the Emirates Stadium during the January transfer window.
While the Magpies stood firm at the time, their stance is less resolute ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Facing financial regulation pressures and a lack of European football next season after an underwhelming domestic campaign, Eddie Howe’s side could sanction a sale if a suitable offer arrives.
Tonali would further elevate Arsenal’s already elite midfield. The Italian’s unique profile combines defensive steel with top-tier progression. His aggressive pressing would perfectly complement Declan Rice.
Tonali, branded a ‘top player’ by Pep Guardiola is comfortable operating as a deep-lying playmaker and in a box-to-box role — technically sound, adept at threading passes between the lines, and with an eye for goal from distance. He has registered nine goal contributions in 53 appearances across all competitions this season.
Securing his signature will be far from straightforward, with Arsenal likely to face direct competition from Manchester United, who have identified the former AC Milan star as a possible replacement for the departing Casemiro.
However, Arsenal’s status as newly crowned champions makes the Emirates a highly attractive destination.
If Arsenal can outmanoeuvre their rivals for the midfield maestro, it would send a clear message to the rest of Europe: the English champions are only getting stronger.
